When we lose teeth, we experience many problems such as difficulties or inability to chew food, altered and unsatisfactory appearance, and speech problem. It also leads to loss of jaw bone and support for the soft tissues of the face, causing sagging of the lips and sunken cheeks.
Dental implants are currently viewed as the gold-standard in the replacement of missing teeth. They are permanently fixed in position, feel normal in your mouth and do not damage any of the remaining teeth.
What are the benefits of dental implants?
- Improve your facial shape.
- Eliminate the need for dentures which, if ill-fitting, can cause a number of irritating problems such as slurred speech and impaired chewing ability.
- Boost your self-esteem.
- Be used for better fitting ‘implant retained’ dentures.
Step 1 – You will be carefully assessed for suitability, taking into account your specific needs and desired outcomes. Treatment planning will usually involve the taking pictures, impressions for the production of models of the teeth, standard x-rays and specialist imaging such as CT scans where necessary.
Step 2 – We will discuss all the treatment options with you, including time-frames and costs, and you will decide which option to pursue. A written treatment plan will then be produced.
Step 3 – The dental implant is a small titanium screw which is carefully and painlessly placed under your gum into the jaw bone under local anaesthetic. Several months are allowed for growth of your bone onto the implant surface, firmly locking the implant into place.
Step 4 – Once this has occurred the implant can be restored with a crown. For larger spaces two or more implants can be used to hold a dental bridge.
